Dr. Holly Vance, a staff scientist at Jefferson Lab and former U.S. Army helicopter pilot, has been awarded the 2025 Barbara Rosenbaum Young Leadership Award by the United Jewish Community (UJCVP) at their annual meeting.
The prestigious award recognizes young leaders who demonstrate exceptional commitment to strengthening and enriching Jewish life on the Peninsula. Named in honor of Barbara Rosenbaum, whose decades-long dedication to the Jewish community has been an inspiration to many, the award celebrates individuals who embody her passion, vision, and commitment to a vibrant Jewish future.
Distinguished Career and Service
Vance brings a remarkable background of service to both her country and community. After completing her undergraduate studies, she served in the U.S. Army National Guard as an aeromedical evacuation Blackhawk helicopter pilot and medevac platoon leader, including a deployment to Afghanistan's Helmand Province.
Her academic achievements are equally impressive. Vance earned both her master's and doctorate in physics from Old Dominion University and served as a postdoctoral fellow at Jefferson Lab and MIT/George Washington University. She currently works as a staff scientist at Jefferson Lab, conducting experimental nuclear physics research.
Community Leadership
For the past three years, Vance has chaired the UJCVP's Preschool Parents Committee, where her leadership has been transformative. She has played a key role in organizing successful community events, including the annual 5K race and Grandparents' Day celebrations. Her dedication, enthusiasm, and clear communication style have inspired others and brought fresh energy and innovation to community programs.
Beyond her committee work, Vance has been studying Hebrew with Carmela Malkin-Kuhn for the past several years and is actively involved at Congregation Emet V'Or, where she is a force behind children's programming.
Award Recognition
In presenting the award, UJCVP President Steve Marks praised Vance's multifaceted contributions to the community. "Holly leads with heart, purpose, and integrity," he said. "Her warmth, organizational skills, and tireless efforts have strengthened community engagement and participation. We are truly grateful for all she brings to our Jewish community."
The Barbara Rosenbaum Young Leadership Award includes a stipend that allows recipients to deepen their leadership journey through immersive Jewish experiences, such as attending a Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) overseas mission or the JFNA General Assembly.
"Holly, you do honor to Barbara," Marks concluded in his remarks. "We look forward to seeing all you will continue to accomplish."
The award ceremony took place during the UJC's annual meeting, celebrating another year of community growth and engagement on the Peninsula.
