Scott A. Gurdin, Rabbi
Rabbi Scott Gurdin has been the Rabbi at Temple Sinai since September, 1998.
A graduate of Binghamton University in New York, Rabbi Gurdin attended seminary at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Jerusalem, Israel and in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his Master of Arts in Hebrew letters degree in 1989 and rabbinic ordination in 1991. As a student, Rabbi Gurdin served congregations in Anniston., Alabama, Sandusky, Ohio, Dayton, Ohio and Memphis, Tennessee.
Previous to his coming to Temple Sinai, Rabbi Gurdin was the Rabbi at B'er Chayim Congregation in Cumberland, Maryland for seven years. While in Cumberland, Rabbi Gurdin also served as a contract chaplain at two Federal Correctional Institutions in the area. He was also very active as a board member and officer of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Alleghenies.
During his years of service to Temple Sinai, Rabbi Gurdin has demonstrated a particular passion for Jewish education and community service. Rabbi Gurdin prepares each of our bar and bat mitzvah students and he teaches our Confirmation Class. He was instrumental in creating our temple's Hebrew School. Rabbi Gurdin has also been a longstanding faculty member in the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School (a project of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem), based out of the United Jewish Community Center of the Virginia Peninsula. As a presence in the Hampton Roads community, Rabbi Gurdin has been a regular guest columnist for the Daily Press. He is also a faithful volunteer chaplain with the Newport News Police Department. Rabbi Gurdin has also been very active in the Midtown Interfaith Association, serving two terms as the association's President.
Rabbi Gurdin is a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. He and his wife, Lisa, have three young children.
